buttons and bows

I just returned home from purchasing my very first sewing machine. I am taking a class through our local community college adult education. Beginning Sewing. I have decided to make pajamas since I love pajamas and it looked like the easiest thing to do. This will be the most expensive pair of pj's if I do not take to sewing as I hope I will. I purchased the Singer 4206. It is nice, and was recommended to me by Singer, and a few of the women at Joanne Fabrics. Opening my machine was like going on a first date. Awkward, although I am sure with time, we will make beautiful music together. Being a stranger to a something as fundamental as a sewing machine made me start thinking. What other things we are strangers to. Homemade bread, mending a sock, or a shirt whose button is missing, gardening, canning, quilting, crocheting. All of those things our mothers and grandmothers and great-grandmothers mastered, and didn't have to take a class to do it. It was taught to them, through generations of love, hard work, and creativity. So, lets all learn something new by 2008, and teach someone else something we know. Happy learning.
